  Brown Scapular        Confraternity

One day through the Rosary and the Scapular I will save the world.”
-Blessed Virgin Mary to St. Dominic

 Brown Scapular Confraternity Enrollment

On July 16, 1251, Our Lady appeared in the Carmelite habit and held out the Brown Scapular to St. Simon Stock in response to his prayers on behalf of the men of the community, who, despite continuous prayers, rigorous fasts, and other penances, were concerned with their sinful nature.

The Blessed Virgin Mary said to St. Simon Stock, “To give you assurance that your priests and brothers will go to Heaven, I bring you a vestment, a Scapular (which is the abbreviated form of the Mantle worn by Carmelites), and this shall be the privilege for you and all Carmelites, that anyone dying in this habit shall not suffer eternal fire.”

Mary promised to an early Carmelite, St. Simon Stock, that anyone who remains faithful to the Carmelite vocation until death will be granted the grace of final perseverance.

The Blessed Virgin gave him the Scapular of Carmel and promised, "Take, beloved son this scapular of thy order as a badge of my confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment, will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in dangers, and a pledge of peace and of the covenant."

The Brown Scapular is a reminder to its wearers of the saving grace which Christ gained upon the cross for all.  Therefore, the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel echoes the promise of Divine Revelation in Matthew 24:13, “The one who holds out to the end is the one who will see salvation; Revelation 2:10, “Remain faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life; and St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians solemnly declares, “I have completed well; I have finished the race, and I have kept the faith.”

FAQs regarding the brown scapular :

1. What pledge does Our Lady make by donning the brown scapular?

"Anyone who passes away wearing this scapular will be protected from the flames of hell.  It serves as a sign of salvation, a dependable safety net amid peril, a commitment to peace, and a guarantee of my personal defence till the end of time.

2. What prerequisites must be met in order to fulfil Our Lady's promise of the Brown Scapular?

should adhere strictly to the Scapular's material, colour, and shape specifications.

to have a priest enrol you in the Scapular.

to persistently wear it.

Please be aware that no particular prayers or good deeds are required in order to get the promise.  The scapular is a form of silent prayer that expresses one's total dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary.  By wearing the Brown Scapular throughout the day, we can convey to Her that we revere, love, and trust in Her protection as part of our dedication to the Scapular.

3. Who could have an interest in the Brown Scapular?

All Catholic believers ought to sign up.  Children are often enrolled after receiving their First Holy Communion.  Investments can be made in newborns.

4. What is the Brown Scapular enrollment process?

You can join or be invested in the Brown Scapular by any priest.

5. How do I sign up for the Brown Scapular?

You can enrol with any Catholic priest.  Historically, only the Carmelite Fathers were authorised to enrol lay believers, and any other priest required special permission to officiate the event.  The Church has now permitted all priests to clad the faithful in the Brown Scapular as a result of how much this devotion has grown throughout the Catholic world.

6. What is the Brown Scapular Confraternity?

A person instantly joins the Confraternity of the Brown Scapular by investing in the Scapular.  The term "Confraternity" refers to the fact that after receiving the Scapular, you become a member of a spiritual family and are granted the opportunity to be associated with the Carmelite Order, share in the virtues of the Carmelite Fathers and Religious in life and in death, and benefit from the promises made by Our Lady through the Scapular.  It used to be normal to have one's name entered in the Confraternity Register; the parish priest would do this for everyone he enrolled by submitting the names to a Carmelite monastery where the Confraternity was canonically established, but this is no longer the norm.  One reason for this is that the Church has removed this requirement from the lay faithful because the scapular has, thanks be to God, become such a universal sacramental and devotion.  To join the Confraternity, one only needs to be invested in the Scapular.

7. What is the process for joining the Confraternity?

by having a priest invest you with the Brown Scapular.

8. What is the proper way to wear the scapular in order to benefit from it?

It must be worn so that one side hangs over your chest and the other side hangs over your back when worn over the shoulder.  The wearer bears the danger of not obtaining the promise if both components are carried in the front or the back.

9. Can I attach or fasten the scapular to my clothing?

No.  One side must hang in the front and the other in the back as it hangs over the shoulders.

Can I use a chain for my scapular instead of a cord?

Yes, provided that the scapular is made entirely of wool.

11. What form must the scapular take?

It must be square or oblong.  It cannot be polygonal, oval, or circular.

12. Can the Scapular bear additional images?

It is acceptable to decorate the scapular with pictures or images, such as the shield of the Carmelites or Our Lady of Mount Carmel.  The Scapular's wool brown colour must, nevertheless, stand out.

13. Is skin contact required for the scapular?

No, it can be layered over or beneath any piece of clothing.

14. May I remove the scapular at any time or must I always wear it?

The Scapular must constantly be worn in order to get the promise.  We must realise that by donning the scapular, we demonstrate our devotion to and commitment to the Blessed Virgin.  If someone removes it whenever it's not convenient to wear it out of fear or vanity, Our Blessed Mother cannot be happy with them.  By donning it, we publicly declare our love, trust, and faith in Her.

15. Can I remove my scapular to take a bath?

Yes.

16. Do I have to reinvest if I need a new scapular?

No.  You only need to purchase and don a new scapular if yours is worn out or broken.  Since the blessing is often offered to the individual who is invested in the Scapular, the blessing and investiture are still valid for the new Scapular.

How does the Sabbatine Privilege work?

The Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly promised Pope John XXII in a vision that She would extricate Her devoted Scapular-wearing children from purgatory quickly after their deaths, particularly the first Saturday following passing away.  The Saturday following their passing, "As a tender Mother, I will descend into purgatory and deliver them into the heavenly mansions of life everlasting."  (The Blessed Virgin Mary speaking to Pope John XXII.  This Sabbatine Privilege was established and taught by Pope John XXII in 1322 through his illustrious Sabbatine Bull, which the Holy See finally ratified in 1908.

18. What conditions must be met to be granted the Sabbatine Privilege?

to persistently don the Brown Scapular.

to practise chastity in accordance with one's situation.

The Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary can be recited every day, along with giving up meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays or, with a priest's blessing, reciting five decades of the Holy Rosary.

The Priest continues:

“By the power granted to me, I admit you to share in all the spiritual works performed, with the merciful help of Jesus Christ, by the Religious of Mount Carmel; in the name of the Father and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. May Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, bless + you whom He has been pleased to receive into the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel.
